Abstract
To clarify the relationship among rumination, avoidance and depression, this study distinguished brooding and reflection as rumination subtypes and examined the relationship among rumination subtypes, avoidance copings(behavior avoidance, cognitive avoidance, experiential avoidance), and depression. And we examined whether experiential avoidance mediated the relationship between rumination subtypes and depression. For this purpose, we measured Ruminative Response Scale(RRS), Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-16 (AAQ-16), Cognitive-Behavior Avoidance Scale(CBAS), The Korean version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression(CES-D), and The Korean version of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI) to a sample of 333 undergraduate students. From the results of the partial correlation analysis, brooding was positively correlated with depression, experiential avoidance, cognitive avoidance, and behavior avoidance. Whereas reflection was positively correlated with depression and behavior avoidance, and was negatively correlated with experiential avoidance. From the results of structural equation modeling, experiential avoidance partially mediated the relationship between brooding and depression, but didn¡¯t mediate the relationship between reflection and depression. These results suggest that brooding represent more maladaptive component of rumination and the avoidant function of rumination be likely to be associated with brooding.
